How Much Weight Can High Grab Adhesive Hold?
A high grab adhesive holds 200 to 400 kg per square metre of bond area. That figure comes from manufacturer data sheets checked September 2026. One 5 mm bead along a 2.4 m skirting board carries over 40 kg of dead load. The number that matters is not the cartridge but the contact area. More bonded area means more holding power.

Grab Rating vs Real Load
The kg/m² Rating
Manufacturers rate grab strength per square metre of bond line. A quality high grab adhesive reaches 200 to 400 kg/m² on porous substrates such as timber, MDF, and plaster. Dense surfaces like glazed tile sit at the lower end of that range. The rating assumes full contact between bead and substrate. Gaps, dust, or an oversize bead cut the real figure fast.
Real-World Load Examples
Typical jobs sit inside the limit:
- Skirting board: 2.4 m of MDF weighs 3 to 5 kg. One perimeter bead carries it with a wide margin.
- Wall panel: a 1.2 × 2.4 m plasterboard panel weighs about 20 kg. Vertical beads every 30 cm give roughly 0.5 m² of contact, or 100 kg of capacity.
- Decorative shelf: a 60 cm timber shelf with 10 kg of load needs two beads on a sound wall.
These figures assume the bond has cured. During the first 24 hours the joint holds about half of its final strength.
When Grab Is Not Enough
Grab is an instant holding force. It is not a licence to overload the joint. Keep the permanent load below a quarter of the rated grab capacity. That safety margin covers temperature swings, substrate movement, and slow creep under load. Where a joint faces vibration or constant stress, choose a MS polymer sealant instead. It stays flexible after cure.
How to Increase Holding Power
Three moves raise the capacity:
- Add beads: doubling the bond line doubles the capacity.
- Prep the surface: remove dust, grease, and loose paint so the bead bonds to the substrate, not the dirt.
- Press for full contact: hold the component firm for 30 seconds so the bead flattens and grips.
Where a joint also needs a weather seal, run a general purpose silicone sealant along the edges after full cure.
The working summary is short. 200 to 400 kg per square metre of contact area. One bead carries a skirting board with ease. Panels need vertical beads every 30 cm. Load the joint only at full strength. Keep permanent loads under a quarter of the rating. The bond then holds for the life of the install.
